China’s Smartphone Market is Consolidating

While China’s smartphone market grew only 2.5%, the top 5 producers shipped between 23 and 56% more units in 2015 than 2014.  These producers controlled about 60% of the market of 178 million units.  All other producers makers combined shipped 26% fewer units.  Apple stands out among the top 5 with an average selling price of $718 and the highest growth rate.  The other producers sold at an average price ranging from $141 to $231.  The data from IDC is summarized in the bar mekko chart below:China Smartphone Market

The Bar Mekko chart captures both market growth and market size.  The bar widths of each smartphone maker are proportional to the number of units each shipped in 2015.  The bar heights show growth in 2015 over 2014.  This allows the reader to pick out the highest growth producers.  The reader can also see the relative size of each producer by comparing bar widths.  I sorted the bars based on their height.  You could also sort based on width to show the largest producer on the left.  I data rows for market share and average selling price.  The first data row contains the numbers used to compute the bar width.  The second adds a relevant new variable to the story, showing how Apple’s pricing is very different from its competitors.  Here is the chart in SlideShare to download and edit using Mekko Graphics:
