Ivy League Endowment Fund Performance

While Harvard University has by far the largest endowment of the ivies, its ten year annualized return is in the middle of the pack.  Princeton, Columbia and Yale have posted 10+% returns.  The other ivies range from 7.2% to 8.8% annualized returns, as reported in the Wall Street Journal and summarized in the chart below:


The Wall Street Journal summarized the return data in a simple stacked bar chart and added bubbles to represent the endowment size.  The bar-mekko allows you to have both size and return in the same chart.  You can more easily see the relationship between the two variables.  For other optiosn for this chart, you can try sorting the bars with the biggest endowment on the left.  If you want to focus on Harvard’s performance and fund size, you can color Harvard crimson and the other parts a paler shade of red (as the WSJ did).   Here is the chart in SlideShare to download and edit using Mekko Graphics:
