Renewable Energy Jobs

Renewable energy has created about 7.7 million jobs worldwide, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).  Solar and biofuels each created about 3 million jobs.  China is the biggest job beneficiary with over 2 million solar jobs and about 500,000 jobs in biofuels and wind power.  Brazil is the leader in biofuels jobs.  The US and the EU lag in renewable energy job creation.  The marimekko chart below presents jobs by technology and country:

The marimekko chart summarizes data in a table in an IRENA report.  The chart allows you to see the relative number of jobs in each technology and how they are broken down by country.  You can also see the jobs in each country by following the same color across the columns.  I did some data summarization to create the chart from the IRENA table.  I grouped all solar and all biofuel jobs together.  I also grouped countries with under 100,000 jobs in a specific technology into “Rest of World.”  The bars are sorted so that the biggest one is on the left and the segments are sorted within each bar so that the biggest is on the bottom.  We treat “Rest of World” as an ‘other series’ and it always appears on the top of each bar.  Here is the chart in SlideShare to downlaod and edit using Mekko Graphics:
