Super Bowl 50 Ads

Food, drink, cars, computers and movies accounted for most of this year’s Super Bowl ads.  Anheuser-Busch, PepsiCo and Hyundai were the only companies with three or more ads.  WeatherTech, Persil and Mexican avocados were among the more obscure advertisers who probably committed a large proportion of their marketing spend to one commercial.  The Marimekko chart below, based on data from USA Today’s Ad Meter, breaks out ads by category and company:

The key issues in creating this Mariemkko chart were in identifying the best categories for the bars.  I went with just 5 larger categories.  This emphasized the broader groupings.  I could have broken food and beverage into food, soft drinks, and beer, split technology into hardware, software/internet, or separated out pharmaceuticals and financial services from other.  These are all judgement calls based on what you’d like to emphasize in your chart.  I also added brands to the company descriptions in each segment and added a data row to show category growth.  Here is the chart in SlideShare to download and edit:
