I've downloaded the trial version of Mekko Graphics software from the Internet and I have a 'watermark' impression on all my slides. Why is this appearing?
Once you download and install Mekko Graphics, you will have a time-limited, fully functional, but unactivated version of the software. You will be able to generate charts for the duration of your trial period; however, the charts will have a watermark visible in both Mekko Graphics and in PowerPoint®. As long as the software is not activated, the watermark will continue to appear. The watermark will appear if you have not yet purchased the software. The watermark is removed when you purchase the software and activate your license.

How can I tell what version of Mekko Graphics I am running?
Go to the Mekko Help menu and choose About. This will give you the version of the software. Another way to determine if you are using Mekko Graphics 3 or 4 is to go to Start > Programs > Mekko Graphics. It will either say Mekko Graphics 3 or Mekko Graphics 4.

How do I uninstall Mekko software?
Click on Start > Settings > Control Panel. Select Add/Remove Programs.
After the dialog window loads the list of installed programs scroll down to the Mekko Graphics entry.
Highlight it and click on Change/Remove. A confirmation box will display with Yes or No options. Click on Yes if you wish to remove the software.

How do I manage my labels with the new Label Manager?
Think of the Label Manager as the control panel of your chart. The Label Manager lists the status of every label in your chart giving you maximum control over the placement of each label. The following categories comprise a comprehensive list of all the possible statuses that may display for any given label.

Placed - the label is placed as initially drawn on the chart
Unplaced - the label does not fit on the chart as initially drawn and does not display on the chart
Resized – label has changed size since its initial state
Edited – label has been manually edited (includes Bold, Italic, Underline, font typeface change, font color change, strikeout, double underline, inplace editing, rotation, and slant)
Moved – label has been moved from its initial position. Once a label is moved, it is considered a manual label and is no longer "connected" to the chart; that is, global changes to the chart will not apply to a moved label.
In Other - the label has been placed in an other series. Once a segment is part of the other series (unless it is the other series), its label is no longer displayed and its status becomes “In Other”.
SmartPlaced - SmartPlace is a Mekko Graphics technology that intelligently positions an unplaced label in its home segment of the chart at the lowest possible font size ensuring it will display on the chart.
Annotated - the user has chosen to annotate (place a label outside its home segment with a line drawn from the label to its home segment) a label on the chart. If no alternate position can be calculated, the label remains unplaced.
Hidden - the label has been hidden from view on the chart

How do I use/create Cascade charts?
A cascade chart (or sometimes referred to as a waterfall chart) is a special type of floating-column chart. Cascade charts show how an initial value is increased and decreased by a series of intermediate values, leading to a final value. Positive values build up, negative values build down. Cascade charts can categorize revenue or cost components of a market segment, as defined by the data series being measured. Each bar is related to and affected by the values in the surrounding bars. That is, given the first bar value, the next bar adds (or subtracts) to it a second value. The third bar then adds (or subtracts) to that value, and so on. The last bar shows the final value after all additions (or subtractions) have been made. You can create or designate a bar as a total bar, which is the sum of the intermittent bars in the cascade chart.

How do I transfer my software to a new computer?
Transferring your license to another computer is different in Mekko Graphics 4 than it was in Mekko Graphics 3. (The transfer license process for Mekko Graphics 3 can be found here). Although there is no "Transfer License" option in Mekko Graphics 4, you can still transfer your license from one computer to another by deactivating the license.
  1. Install the trial version of the software on your new computer you wish to transfer the license to.
  2. Uninstall the software from your older computer to comply with the license agreement. When you uninstall the software, the software is automatically deactivated, so that activation is available for another installation on another computer using the same serial number.
  3. On the new computer, launch PowerPoint® and insert a chart from the Mekko menu. Once you double click the chart object, you will be prompted to enter a serial number. Enter your serial number from your older computer.
Note: We strongly advise uninstalling Mekko Graphics from the original computer before decommissioning it; however, we understand that sometimes this is not possible. If access to the original computer is not available, you may not be able to activate on the new computer on your own. Please contact Mekko Graphics support for assistance by sending an email to support@mekkographics.com.

I would like my Y axis to be vertical, not horizontal on my charts. Is this possible?
Yes, the Preference Manager provides customization of colors and fonts, as well as other miscellaneous functions, including Y axis orientation. The Regions tab in the Preference Manager allows you to select the Mekko Graphics 4 default setting that corresponds to your geographical area. Once you choose your region, you may overwrite the default settings by choosing the Customized radio button and creating a custom definition for your region. Customized settings in this tab are saved for each region.

Can I create a horizontal legend?
By default, the legend displays as a single column on the right hand side of the chart. However, the legend is totally customizable. Similar to a Microsoft PowerPoint® text box, you can select the legend area and resize it. Small circles appear in the four corners of the legend area and in the middle of each side. Drag the legend areas from any of these circles to increase the size of the legend area. As the size increases, Mekko Graphics will attempt to fit all labels in the new legend area at the legend font size.

I cannot open my Mekko Graphics 3 Gantt chart in Mekko Graphics 4.
In our latest Mekko Graphics version 4.2, you will find two new chart types: Absolute Gantt and Relative Gantt chart. We have rebuilt our Gantt chart from the ground up, and you will appreciate the enhanced functionality and design! Due to the complete redesign of the Gantt chart, charts created in Mekko Graphics 3 cannot be edited in Mekko Graphics 4.2. For more information on how to use the new Gantt charts, please refer to our Mekko Help file in the latest version.

Why do I not see the Gantt chart as a chart type?
Mekko Graphics version 4.0 does not include the Gantt chart as a chart type.  Gantt charts are available in version 4.2 of our software.  If you have a licensed version of 4.0, you can upgrade to our new version for free.  Click here to download Mekko Graphics 4.2.

Can charts created in version 4.2 be opened in version 4.0?
Yes, since version 4.2 is a minor upgrade to version 4.0, charts created in version 4.2 are able to be opened in version 4.0.
