The $375 billion medical device market is highly fragmented. In each major market segment, no one competitor has more than a 30% market share. In addition, the top 5 segments account for only half of the market. Finally, few large competitors span multiple market segments. Only Johnson & Johnson, Medtronic, Siemens and Abbott Laboratories have significant share in more than one major market segment. The market map is a key tool for strategy consultants and analysts. It splits a market by sector and by competitor, highlighting opportunities for entry, exit or consolidation. Most markets are not as fragmented as the medical device market. In these instances the “Other” category is not as prominent. To emphasize the fragmented nature of this market, I colored all competitors that were only in one major segment a dark grey and the Other series in a light grey.
