Where Do Americans Study Abroad?

Over 300,000 American college students spent the 2013/4 academic year studying abroad.  Not surprisingly, European tourist destinations like the U.K., Italy and Spain were the most common locales.  China, Costa Rica, and Australia were also very popular destinations.  The Marimekko chart below, based on data from the Institute for International Education, summarizes the students choices by country, grouped by region:

The Marimekko chart groups countries by region.  It allows you to see the most popular regions and the countries within each region.  In creating the chart, I considered how to group the countries into regions.  I used far fewer regions than I found in the data table.  I also grouped countries with fewer than 2,000 students into an “Other” category in each region.  My goal was to paint a broad picture rather than to provide information on how many students studied in Antarctica (15) or Macedonia (7).   Here is the chart in SlideShare to download and edit using Mekko Graphics:
