The top six athletic conferences received $108 million of the $168 million the NCAA distributed from March Madness profits. The NCAA distributes the profits from their Men’s Basketball Tournament to the conferences in which the participating teams compete. The conferences can then share the profits with their member colleges. Since teams from these six conferences dominate the tournament by winning almost 60% of their games, they receive the lion’s share of the profits. The chart below is based on data from the NCAA.
The cascade chart allows you to ‘build up’ the total revenue distributed by conference. You can show how each conference’s revenue relates to the total for the 6 conferences and how the 6 conference total relates to the full amount distributed. I made the series names the percentages that appear in each segment. This way I could show both the percentage of the total and the amount each conference received. I added a data row with win percentage to illustrate that the conferences that received the biggest payouts also won the majority of their tournament games.
