Overseas Market for US Films

Who Watches American Movies?

The international box office for US films was over $26 billion in 2014.  China and Japan were the two largest markets with the Asia Pacific region as a whole surpassing EMEA in total box office revenue and Latin America accounting for just $3 billion.  Each region is consolidated with the four largest countries making up over 50% of the region’s box office revenue.  The chart below summarizes the data and is based on the Motion Picture Academy of America’s 2014 Theatrical Market Statistics Report:

The Marimekko chart maps the International Box Office by region and country.  In the MPAA report the top 20 countries are presented in a table and the region data is presented in a bar chart.  The Marimekko combines both and gives you a better visual rendering of the relationship between countries, regions and the overall market.  I added annotation lines to show information on the five of the countries with the smallest box office revenue (Taiwan, Indonesia, Sweden, Netherlands and Turkey).  Mekko Graphics allows annotated labels to appear above the chart (as in the Asia Pacific bar) or in the adjacent segment (as in the EMEA bar).  Here is the chart in SlideShare for you to download and edit:
