The Dallas Cowboys are worth $4.2 billion and are the most valuable sports team in the world in 2017, according to Forbes. They are followed by the New York Yankees and Manchester United, both valued at $3.7 billion. Overall 12 of the top 25 are NFL teams, 5 MLB, 4 European soccer (UK, Spain and Germany), and 4 NBA. New York, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Chicago all have multiple teams on the list. The highest growth in value came from the Los Angeles Rams, a new team in 2017. Only Real Madrid was worth less in 2017 than 2016, among the top 25.
To create the chart, I imported the data from the web into Word, created a table in Word, and inserted the table into Excel. I then used Excel formulas to extract the growth and value for each team from the table into their own columns.
I created a Mekko Graphics stacked bar chart in PowerPoint from my range in Excel. In my PowerPoint chart, I add columns for each group of teams (NFL, MLB, ...). This allowed me to color each group differently in the chart and to create a legend that related colors to groups. I added a data row for YoY growth.
I rotated the chart so that is was horizontal. I find that you can display a longer list of items horizontally than vertically. There are several other Charts of the Week that use this approach.
As final touches, I removed the X axis line and the Y axis, adjusted the Y axis maximum value to have the bars fill the chart, and ordered the legend so that the largest group was on the top.
