Marimekko chart of CO2 emissions from domestic and international air travel by country

Air Travel Emissions

Ten countries account for 60% of air travel emissions, as shown in this Marimekko chart. Travel within and from the United States account for 24% and travel from and within China account for another 13%.  41% of air travel emissions are from domestic and 59% from international flights. Domestic flights account for over half of CO2 emissions in the US, China and India. International flights dominate in other countries. Air travel emissions data are from International Council on Clean Transportation.

How I Made this Marimekko Chart with Average Line

Here is the air travel emissions data I used to create the Marimekko chart:

Data for Marimekko chart of CO2 emissions from domestic and international air travel by country

Here's how I made the Marimekko chart with average line:

  • modify the Excel file with air travel emissions data provided by International Council on Clean Transportation to remove extraneous columns
  • remove row for EU as it is redundant with country level data
  • create a formula for rest of world to sum up all countries after France in the datasheet
  • create a Mekko Graphics chart in PowerPoint from the data range shown above
  • use Switch Bars and Series button to treat rows as bars and columns as series
  • widen internal chart margins so that chart area fills the container
  • open Format Axis task pane to add y axis title, hide y axis line and tick marks and hide x axis line
  • in Format Chart task pane, show bar total percentages and display them on second line and show values in the segments
  • add custom suffix to grand total by right-clicking on the label
  • show legend and move it to the bottom of the chart
  • add average line and move it to display at 41% and add title to the average line
  • change colors of series
  • reduce font sizes of labels that display in smaller segments and on top of smaller bars, make bar labels in smaller segments slanted (via lasso and right-click)
