Bitcoin Mining by Country
Bitcoin mining fell between 2020 and 2021. China’s mining ban was partially offset by significant increases in other countries, as shown in this stacked bar chart. Data are from University of Cambridge Center for Alternative Finance, Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index.
Bitcoin Mining by Country in a Stacked Bar Chart with Data Column
Why Use a Stacked Bar Chart for Bitcoin Mining Trends
The stacked bar chart shows the total mining effort and the effort broken down by country, in this case over 2 time periods. The data column documents the percentage change in each country. You can see both the total trend and any country-based differences. In our chart, the emphasis is the impact of Chins ban on mining and how it was countered by growth in other countries. I grouped many of the smaller countries together to simplify the chart and drive home the main point.
How I Made this Marimekko Chart
Here is the bitcoin mining data I used to create the stacked bar chart:
Here's how I made the stacked bar chart:
- download data from University of Cambridge Center for Alternative Finance, Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index into Excel and create a PivotTable to extract the data for September 2020 and August 2021 above
- add formula for percentage change and copy to all relevant rows
- create a stacked bar chart in Excel based on the data range above
- in Format Bars and Series, show the last column as a data column formatted as percentage and add the smaller countries to Other
- Use Show Labels menu item to show series name, value and percentage in all bars
- edit % change label to show total % change and make it bold
- adjust y axis maximum and hide x axis line
- add y axis title and hide other elements of y axis
- color background of Canada 2020 label to make it stand out in smaller segment and color other series gray
- adjust margins
