How I Made this Stacked Bar Chart with Data Rows and Growth Lines

Here is China's global spending data that I used to create the stacked bar chart:

Data for stacked bar chart of China's global investment and construction spending 2005-2019

Here's how I made the stacked bar chart:

  • create PivotTables from the data on investment and construction spending from the China Global Investment Tracker
  • copy and paste totals for construction and investments for each year to create a dataset for the chart
  • add formulas for year over year (YoY) growth to dataset as shown above
  • create stacked bar chart in PowerPoint from the dataset in Excel
  • use Format Bars and Series to specify the data rows
  • right-click on values in data rows to format as percentages
  • add the two growth lines (2005-2017 and 2017-2019) and show CAGR data on the lines
  • data scale to convert data from millions to billions to simplify display of bar totals and segment values
  • show values only in segments and series names in legend
  • add $B to segment values and bar totals
  • update series colors
  • move legend to bottom of chart
  • hide y axis
  • specify YoY Growth as x axis label and move to make header for data rows
  • adjust internal chart margins
