Marimekko chart of 20 decacorns by country based on data from CB Insights and valuations as of January 2019.

Decacorns—World's Largest Unicorns

While there are over 300 unicorns, there are only 20 decacorns.  These private companies with valuations of $10 billion or more are grouped by country and shown in this Marimekko chart.  Data for this chart come from CB Insights and were computed on January 23, 2019.

Twelve of the decacorns are from the US.  They are Uber (and Lyft), WeWork, JUUL, Airbnb, Stripe, SpaceX, Epic Games, Palantir, Samumed, Pinterest and Infor.  The five from China are Bytedance, Didi Chuxing, Lu.com, Bitmain and DJI Innovations.  The three others are Global Switch from UK, Grab from Singapore and One97 from India.

Decacorns in a Marimekko Chart with Data Row

How I Made This Marimekko Chart with Data Row

Using PivotTables is often the key to easily populate the data needed for a Marimekko chart.  A list of unicorns, their valuation, country, category, funding and investors can be downloaded from CB Insights.  A screenshot is below:

I created a PivotTable from the data to organize it by country and to restrict to just decacorns.  Here is a screenshot:

Here are the steps to make this Marimekko chart with data row, starting with the above PivotTable:

  • create a Marimekko chart in PowerPoint based on the selected PivotTable data from above
  • add a column for 'Rest of World" and include a formula to add data from Singapore, UK and India columns
  • add a row with formulas for % of Total data row
  • open Bars and Series dialog and designate % of Total as a data row with number formatting as a percentage
  • hide bars for Singapore, UK and India
  • open Chart task pane (Format Chart) and show values and labels in each segment
  • go to Numbers tab and format segment values, bar totals and grand total as $B
  • choose Color by Bars option
  • hide axis lines and tick marks
  • adjust internal chart margins
  • click on % of Total Value label and uncheck Autowrap to show label on one line
  • select a segment in each bar and adjust bar colors in Format Segment/Series task pane
  • select labels in Rest of World bar and show as vertical
