How I Made this Scatter Chart

Here is the football transfer data I used to create the scatter chart:

Scatter chart of top 5 football clubs transfer spending and earnings in last 10 transfer windows.

Here's how I made the chart:

  • copy the data from CIES Football Observatory into Excel
  • use Excel formulas to create the data needed to fill the spreadsheet above
  • create a scatter chart in PowerPoint based on the Excel data
  • adjust chart margins and axis scales to make the height and width of the chart area the same scale
  • add axis titles and custom suffix to axis labels
  • place legend in lower left and increase marker size
  • hide series labels for all data points in lower left of chart
  • move other series labels to make the chart easier to read
  • bold the Lille and Manchester City labels
