How I Made this US GDP Marimekko Chart with Data Row

Here is the data I used to create the Marimekko chart:

Southeast, Far West and Mideast each account for about 20% of US GDP. California, Texas, New York and Florida are the biggest contributors, as shown in this Marimekko chart.

Here's how I made the Marimekko chart:

  • download US GDP by state data from Bureau of Economic Analysis
  • group states by region as shown above (possibly using a PivotTable)
  • add formula to create data row for % of total as in row 53 below
  • create a Marimekko chart in PowerPoint based on the Excel data range
  • in Series tab of Bars and Series dialog,  show % of Total as data row
  • Sort Bars with widest on left and series with biggest on bottom
  • hide bar totals and grand total
  • adjust margins to minimize white space around chart, leaving room at top and on right for data labels
  • reduce font sizes of some labels and rotate others to fit more in segments
  • annotate labels that do not fit in segments on top and right
  • color series to produce shadings in each bar
