How I Made this Build-Up Cascade Chart with Data Rows

The Global 100 data for this chart is presented below:

Data for build-up cascade chart of market capitalization of all the Global 100 companies by country, including number and per cent of market cap per country

Here's how I made the build-up cascade chart with data rows:

  • use pdftables to convert the data from the PwC report into a form that I can copy and paste into Excel
  • create a Mekko Graphics chart in PowerPoint based on the Excel data
  • use Switch Bars and Series to treat columns as data and rows as bars
  • add row for total market cap
  • add row for Rest of World and sum all countries with just one global 100 company
  • add column for % of market cap, using formula
  • set number of companies and % of market cap to data rows
  • hide bars for all companies that were added into Rest of World
  • use data scaling to divide data by 1,000 and then show bar totals as $T
  • adjust internal margins
  • add segment links and set to 1 point size
  • hide axes and adjust y axis maximum and internal chart margins
