How I Made this Stacked Bar Chart with Data Rows

The Global 100 data for this chart is presented below:

Data for stacked bar chart showing percentage of market cap distributed through share buyback and dividends for the Gloabl 100 by sector.

Here's how I made the stacked bar chart with data rows:

  • use pdftables to convert the data from the PwC report into a form that I can copy and paste into Excel
  • create a Mekko Graphics chart in PowerPoint based on the Excel data
  • use the switch bars and series to treat the spreadsheet columns as series and the rows as bars
  • edit some of the bar and series labels to make them more readable in the chart
  • use Format Bars and Series dialog to specify which series to be displayed on chart, as data rows, or ignored, to add data row totals and to format data rows
  • adjust the internal margins to make room for the data rows
  • select data row labels and unclick autowrap to show them on one line
  • show values in segments and format them as percentages
  • format bar totals as percentages
  • use format axis task pane to hide y axis, x axis line and to adjust the y axis maximum from 7% to 6.5%
  • add a legend and move it to the top of the chart area
  • add average line, reduce its width and change its title to show as Global 100
  • move labels that overlap average line
