Global Cloud Data Centers in a Marimekko Chart
Why Use a Marimekko Chart for a Market Map
The Marimekko chart breaks down cloud data centers along two dimensions simultaneously. The reader can see the size of each vendor and the regional mix of each vendor's data centers. You can quickly see if one vendor is more concentrated in a certain region, as is the case with Alibaba.
How I Made this Marimekko Chart
Here is the cloud data centers data I used to create the Marimekko chart:
Here's how I made the Marimekko chart:
- copy the data table above from Four myths about the cloud into Excel
- create a Marimekko chart in PowerPoint from the Excel data range
- in Format Bars and Series, hide Total series and show Regional Total Bar as a data column
- add Total label to Regional Total data column
- Sort Bars with widest on left and sort series with biggest on bottom of each bar
- create an "Other" series called Rest of World and add series from smaller regions to it
- show Legend and align it to data column
- hide grand total label
- show values, percentages in segment labels
- color Other series light grey
- adjust margins
- edit East and Southeast Asia label so that it appears on two lines
