Less than a quarter of the adults in India own a smartphone, while another 40% own mobile phones, as shown in this bar mekko chart. Smartphone and mobile phone penetration is higher in other emerging economies. Data are from a Pew Research survey.
Among the six large emerging economies in the bar mekko chart, smartphone penetration is highest in Brazil and Mexico at 60% and 55%, respectively. Nigeria is notable for having only 39% smartphone penetration, but another 44% of adults have mobile phones that are not smartphones.

How I Made This Bar Mekko Chart
I used a stacked bar mekko chart to show total mobile and smartphone penetration and the split in penetration each country between mobile and smartphones. The widths of the bars are set to the relative size of the adult population in each country. I found the population numbers in Wikipedia and the population that was 18+ in indexmundi. Here is a screen capture of the data used to create the chart:
Here are the steps to make this stacked bar-mekko chart with data row:
- create a new bar mekko chart in PowerPoint
- input the data from the Pew Research report for the percentage of mobile and smartphone users in each emerging economy
- enter population data and % of adult population data from web
- add formulas to compute adult population for each country
- set bar widths to be adult population and display this as a data row
- show values in each segment
- format values in segment and bar totals to show with a % as suffix
- remove bars for smaller countries (Tunisia, Kenya, South Africa)
- adjust y axis maximum and hide x and y axes
- color series
- add legend and position in top left of chart area
- adjust internal chart margins
