Nobel Laureates in Economics
Just under half of the 83 Nobel laureates in economics came from 6 U.S. universities, as shown in this Marimekko chart. University of Chicago led all other organizations with 12 of the 83 economics Nobel laureates. University of California, Harvard, Princeton, MIT and Columbia rounded out the top 6. 22 laureates (29%) came from other US universities and 18 came from the rest of the world. Yale, Arizona State, Stanford, Carnegie Mellon and New York were the other US universities with 2 or more economics Nobel laureates. The University of Cambridge was the only organization outside of the US with 2 or more economics Nobel laureates. Data from The Nobel Prize was compiled by Kaggle.
Economics Nobel Laureates in a Marimekko Chart with Annotation Data Row
How I Made This Marimekko Chart with Data Row
I used an unconventional set of bars in the Marimekko chart. I wanted to emphasize how consolidated the laureates were both in the US and in a few select schools. The first bar showed the top schools, the second showed the rest of the US and the third the rest of the world. I grouped any university with just one laureate into the 'other' series.
I started by downloading the data from Kaggle into Excel and creating a PivotTable. The PivotTable and the related data from the Mekko Graphics Data Editor are below:
Here are the steps to make this Marimekko chart with data row:
- create a Marimekko chart in PowerPoint based on the selected PivotTable data from above
- add column to the data for top 6 universities and move data from US column into this column
- add column for rest of world and put formula in all rows of this columns summing up data for all other countries
- add rows for other series and % total data row to bottom of spreadsheet
- use Bars and Series dialog column to specify which bars to show on chart and which to hide and which series to show as data row
- format the data row as a percentage
- create Other series in Bars and Series and add all data with value less than 2 to other
- show series names and values in each segment
- sort bars biggest on left and series biggest on bottom
- manually color series to make each bar a shade going from dark to light and other series a neutral gray
- adjust internal chart margins, hide axis lines and chart borders
