Pandas on Loan Around the World
China has lent out 60 giant pandas to 22 zoos, as shown in this Marimekko chart. Twenty-eight of the 60 are in 10 European zoos. Most zoos have 2 or 3 pandas. The zoos with the most pandas are Adventure World in Japan with 6 and Pairi Daiza in Belgium with 5. Chiang Mai Zoo in Thailand is the only zoo with a single panda. In most countries, there is only one zoo with pandas. The exceptions are the United States with 3 zoos and Japan with two.

Here's how I made the Marimekko chart:
- create a Marimekko chart in PowerPoint and enter the data as above into the Mekko Graphics Data Editor
- add the #zoos row, using the =COUNT formula to fill in the values
- designate #of Zoos as a data row, using right-click on cell A24
- in Bars and Series dialog, click Auto-total to add the total number to the data row
- show names and values in segment labels
- color segments individually to put color gradients in each bar
- hide axes, make chart border white and adjust margins
