Stacked Bar Chart of Number of Screens and Box Office for Star Wars Movie

Star Wars' Record Opening Weekend

Star Wars: The Force Awakens set the record for US box office revenue on its opening weekend.  The Disney movie made almost $250 million, which was 79% of the total box office for the weekend.  Since it only appeared on 31% of available movie screens, its gross per screen of $60,000 was over ten times higher than Sisters--the next biggest grossing movie.  The data from Box Office Mojo is presented in the chart below:

The 100% stacked bar chart compares number of screens and movie gross for the top 8 movies of the weekend, which accounted for 80% of the screens and 95% of the revenue.  I added data columns for the film name and revenue per screen and segment comparison lines to emphasize the difference between Star Wars and its competition.  The chart was created with no manual data entry.  I copied the data from the web into Excel and created a PivotTable from the data that had screens, weekend gross, and gross per screen as value columns.  I highlighted the range in excel and made a 100% stacked bar chart in Mekko Graphics from the range.  I added the Other series and data columns to the chart.  Here is the chart in SlideShare to download:
