The Decline of Branch Banking

Branch banking in the US has been in a decline over the last decade, as shown in this stacked bar chart with net line. In every year between 2010 and 2020, there were more bank branch closings than openings. Last year,1,251 branches opened and 2,788 closed. Branch banking data came from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.

How I Made this Branch Banking Stacked Bar Chart

The branch banking data I used to create the chart is pictured below:

Here's how I made the chart:

  • download the branch banking data from Visual Capitalist into Excel (Visual Capitalist compiled the data from the FDIC)
  • change the sign on the closings data to negative and add the Net Changes data
  • create a stacked bar chart in PowerPoint based on the Excel data
  • click Switch Bars/Series button to treat the rows as bars
  • show Net Changes as Net Line
  • add legend
  • include y axis title and hide other parts of y axis and x axis line
  • adjust series colors and internal chart margins
