Time Spent on Digital Media

Americans spend 70% of their digital media time on smartphones, up from 57% two years ago, as shown in the 100% stacked bar chart on the left. Time spent on desktops went down from 34% to 23% and time spent on tablets went down from 9% to 7%.

Almost all of the digital media time is spent in apps rather than on the web, as shown in the Marimekko chart on the right. On smartphones, 90% of time is in apps and on tablets 84% is spent in apps. Data are compiled by ComScore.

How I Made this 100% Stacked Bar and Marimekko Chart

Here's how I made the 100% stacked bar chart on the left:

create a 1/2 page left chart in PowerPoint and change type to 100% stacked bar
type in data from ComScore for 2017 and 2019
add legend to the chart
display values in all segments and format as a percentage
change segment colors
hide y axis and x axis line
add segment links
adjust internal margins and bar gaps

Here's how I made the Marimekko chart on the right:

copy the 100% stacked bar and paste it
change the chart type to Marimekko
replace the data with the ComScore digital media data as shown above right
add legend to the chart and hide legend item NA
display percentages in segments and format to remove parentheses (by default these will display as percentage of the bar total)
hide segment label from Desktop bar
change segment colors
hide y axis and x axis line
make chart borders white
adjust internal margins
