The average US household has income of $73,574 and spends $53,708, with the rest going to taxes and savings, as shown in this 100% stacked bar chart. Housing-related costs (including utilities) account for about 27% of spending. Vehicle costs, including gas and insurance, account for 17%. Fourteen percent of spending is on food with 8% at home and 6% outside the home. Health insurance and other medial costs account for 9% of spending, household expenses 8% and entertainment 6%. The data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics were organized and consolidated by Engaging Data. They also have similar charts for each income quintile.

How I Made This 100% Stacked Bar Chart with Exploding Segment
The data is organized so that the three bars (columns) each have data in different rows (series) as shown below:
Here are the steps to make the 100% stacked bar chart:
- type data from Engaged Data website into Mekko Graphics Data Editor as shown above
- combine some of the series to increase readability (e.g., combine federal, state and local taxes)
- apply a custom soft to the series so that like spending categories are grouped together (e.g, vehicles is grouped with gas and insurance)
- show series labels with values and percentages
- add the y axis title
- hide other parts of y axis and hide x axis line
- adjust internal chart margins and bar gaps
- add segment links to show that spending series in income use bar explodes into spending bar
- adjust colors for series so that like spending items have similar colors as do difference income source and use series
