Weekend Getaway Costs
It’s almost 4 times more expensive to getaway to Milan for a weekend than to getaway to Istanbul, as shown in this horizontal bar chart. Data from Deutsche Bank's Mapping the World's Prices 2019 report indicate that the cost of a weekend getaway to Milan is $2,706, to New York City is $1,631 and to Istanbul is $711. A weekend getaway includes two nights at a standard 5-star hotel room, two pub meals for two, two restaurant dinners for two, car rental for two days, two pints of beer, four liters of soft drinks/water, and purchases of a pair of jeans and a pair of sports shoes.

How I Made This Horizontal Bar Chart with Data Rows
Data for this chart are presented below:
The Deutsche Bank report contained data for 50 cities. I chose a representative group of 20, focusing on the extremes in cost, larger cities and cities on all continents. Twenty bars is about the maximum number for a readable horizontal bar chart on a standard landscape PowerPoint slide.
Here's how I made the horizontal bar chart with data row:
- used pdftable website to convert the report into an Excel file
- copied the getaway costs table from the Excel file into a new workbook
- extracted the rows for the 20 cities and the columns for cost for 2019
- opened a previous Chart of the Week that showed the price of a pint of beer around the world
- paste data from Excel into the Mekko Graphics Data Editor for this chart
- placed the city data in the appropriate continent column
- adjusted the arrow column to indicate whether cost was higher or lower than New York (our benchmark)
- changed the data format of bar totals
- updated the colors of the series to match the legend
- changed y axis maximum so that the longest bar stretched to end of chart area
- made font color of data rows for those cities with costs greater than New York red and less than New York green
